LANAP Laser Gum Treatment in Burnaby
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an infection in the gums that causes chronic inflammation. As with all inflammatory illnesses, gum disease puts the entire body at risk. Recent studies link periodontal disease to many systemic conditions.
- Heart disease
- Respiratory diseases
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Certain cancers
Untreated periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, foul breath, and bone loss, which can destroy the foundation for all of the teeth and impact the facial appearance.
Diagnosing Periodontal Disease
We perform “periodontal charting” at your hygiene visit to identify any areas of deep pocketing between the teeth and gums. Bleeding, swollen, and recessive areas will also indicate gum infection.
Treating Periodontal Disease with LANAP
Until recently, the only option to resolve moderate to severe gum disease cases included traditional surgery to remove damaged gum tissue and promote healing. At Central Park Dental Clinic, Dr. Roger Chan has sought additional training to become certified in LANAP gum surgeries for the benefit of our patients. We proudly offer LANAP laser gum surgery in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic.
Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, or LANAP, uses a small laser fiber to replace the scalpel and stitches required in traditional surgery. Laser gum surgery provides our patients with overall superior results.
Benefits of LANAP Laser Gum Surgery in V5H 1Y8
Reduced discomfort – Because laser light energy is far more precise and eliminates the need to “cut” the gums; patients find that the procedure and post-operative experience are far more comfortable.
Faster healing time – Because cutting and stitches are both eliminated, your gums heal faster with the help of our follow-up dental visits and following post-operative follow-up instructions, including additional appointments and a bite splint.
Reduces recession – LANAP lasers fit neatly between the teeth and gums to remove diseased tissue and bacteria without cutting or reducing gum size.
Stimulates regeneration – Laser energy stimulates regeneration of healthy tissue, which will then reattach to the teeth to reduce pocketing.
Fewer post-operative infections – Patients usually enjoy hassle-free healing without stitches and with minimal discomfort and infections.
What to Expect with LANAP Gum Surgery
We will arrange two 2-hour appointments to perform the laser surgery. First, we will complete one-half of your mouth, and one week later, we will finish the other.
We will completely anesthetize the gums before we begin so that you can enjoy a pain-free procedure. You might notice changes in your bite and the appearance of your gums immediately following LANAP. These signs are a normal part of the healing process.
Once your gums have a chance to heal, we will arrange follow-up dental appointments to make small adjustments to the bite and take impressions for the bite splint that will protect your gums and bone.
You will also need to avoid brushing and flossing at first, usually for about ten days, so as not to disturb the healing tissue. It is best to stick to a soft or liquid-based diet for an entire month.
We will continue follow-up visits and take measurements of the gum pockets to ensure that your gum infection is completely resolved. Excellent home care will be necessary to keep gums healthy once normal teeth cleaning can be resumed.
