Dental Crowns Can Improve Your Smile
Dental crowns are essentially tooth covers that cap a damaged tooth, restoring its size, shape, and function. For example, if you have an old, large filling in your back molar, over time this filling will begin to pull away from the tooth; it can also cause the tooth to develop a fracture. When too much of the tooth has been prepared to make room for such a large filling, there isn’t enough of the tooth structure left to replace the filling. Instead, a dental crown fits over the tooth and restores its function. Dental crowns are made to blend in seamlessly with your surrounding teeth, so it looks completely natural.
Sometimes dental crowns are used toward the front of your mouth where they can be visible when you smile. Often, crowns are used to cover a tooth that is badly stained and resistant to teeth bleaching or to hide a tooth that is misshapen or otherwise damaged. In these situations, dental crowns not only restore your chewing function, but they can also give you back your smile.
Let’s take a closer look at dental crowns at our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, and what they can do to give you a better smile.
First: The Procedure for Dental Crowns
The entire procedure usually takes place in two separate appointments. In the first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth, so it is ready to receive the crown. A mould of your tooth is taken both so it can be sent to the lab to create your permanent crown and also so we can make a temporary crown to fit over the prepared tooth in the meantime.
It usually takes a couple of weeks for the lab to fabricate your permanent crown, at which time you’ll return to our dental clinic so we can place it. After your dentist makes sure it feels comfortable—especially for biting down and chewing—he or she will cement it into place permanently.
With proper care, your dental crown can last ten years or even more.
Second: Cosmetic Uses for Dental Crowns
Regardless of the reason for getting a dental crown, the procedure is the same. Crowns are used cosmetically in the following situations:
- To cover up a tooth that is badly stained and resistant to teeth whitening
- To restore a tooth that has suffered a trauma and is broken or otherwise damaged
- To fix a tooth that has an odd shape, which is having a negative impact on your smile
