Are Dentures a Good Tooth Replacement Option?

October 29, 2018
Posted By: Fanny Chu, DMD

As we age, daily wear and tear take its toll on our teeth, and they can gradually start to break down. At some point, you may experience tooth loss and need to consider what type of replacement is the best choice for you.

Full and partial dentures are a time-tested tooth replacement that is popular because they are a good solution that works well for most people. And, contrary to what you might think, a beautiful set of new dentures can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth. Dentures can give you back your beautiful smile and fill out the shape of your mouth and cheeks for a more youthful appearance. Better yet, you’ll be able to laugh, speak and chew again with confidence!

Different Types of Dentures

Anyone who has experienced tooth loss is a good candidate for dentures. Here are the types of dentures available and what they do:

  • Full (Complete) dentures are a good solution for you if you are missing all your teeth in either your upper arch, lower arch, or both. They consist of natural-looking artificial teeth placed a gum-colored acrylic base and are held in place by suction.
  • Partial dentures are used when one or more of your natural teeth remain. Partials are also affixed to an acrylic base and are designed to fit in and around remaining teeth. They are typically held in place by metal or plastic clasps attached to adjacent teeth.
  • Implant supported dentures pair with a dental implant anchored in your jaw to prevent the movement and irritation that is so common with removable dentures.
