Calling your emergency Burnaby dentists allows us to assess your situation, provide tips and advice on how to treat your pain until we can see you and schedule you to see us as soon as possible.

We invite new patients to call us during their dental emergency; we always leave space to see patients during this stressful event.

When Is My Problem a Dental Emergency?Lady relaxing after dental treatment at Central Park Dental Clinic

If you have a dental problem, you might wonder if you should call right away. We encourage you to do so. We will ask the appropriate questions to determine if an emergency appointment is necessary. The most important thing to remember is your dental health. If you are ever in doubt about a condition you are experiencing, call us right away!

Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Lost permanent tooth
  • Swelling
  • Trauma
  • Cracked tooth
  • Lost dental crown
  • Lost filling
  • Pain in your gums
  • Severe sensitivity
  • Bleeding
  • Tooth discolouration

Remember, if you have an accident and may have head injuries or if you have severe bleeding that won't stop, a visit to the emergency room is in order. We can treat your dental problem once you've seen a doctor to rule out more serious injuries to your head and neck.

Handling Dental Emergencies

Severe Tooth Pain

Many root canals start with a small infection that gets worse if left untreated—often this is accompanied by tooth pain. If you are experiencing pain, don't hesitate to call us immediately. Some patients may require an emergency root canal to keep the infection from spreading and to save the tooth.

Once you give us a call, we will be able to help assess the situation and offer advice for pain relief. If an emergency root canal cannot treat the infection or decay, we may need a dental extraction to keep your remaining teeth safe. Burnaby patients can feel confident knowing that they will not feel pain or discomfort with either dental procedure—in many instances, the root canal will end any pain or suffering.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A tooth can be knocked out in an accident, from a sports injury, or other types of trauma. It can be challenging to think clearly during an emergency, which is why our dental team can provide calming guidance for keeping your tooth safe until we can see you.

The sooner we can see our patients after an accident, the better our odds are of saving the tooth. We have a limited time frame after the incident to successfully restore the tooth in its socket.

If you are bleeding uncontrollably or you've suffered a hard hit to your face or jaw, go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.

Loose Dental Crown

A dental crown can become loose or fall out for many different reasons, a common one being an undiagnosed cavity underneath the prosthetic. Give us a call right away so we can get you a booking. If your dental crown is loose or has fallen out, keep it safe to avoid further damage to the crown.

If the tooth has not been injured, we may be able to restore the dental crown. If your dental crown has fallen out due to tooth decay, your Burnaby emergency dentist can fill in the cavity and restore your smile.

Lost Filling

Our dental team can replace a lost filling with a new one. If your filling has fallen out, rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid eating or brushing until we can see you.

Will I Need to Come in After Hours?Man smiling in dental chair after emergency dental care in burnaby bc

If you experience a dental emergency with pain, call us right away. If you call during business hours, we will do our best to treat you on the same day, whenever possible. If you experience an after-hours emergency, our highly skilled Burnaby dentists can determine if an emergency visit outside of normal business hours is necessary or if it can wait until the next business day. Your health and comfort are always our number one priority.

Once you arrive at our clinic, we will take an x-ray of the area and Drs. Chan, Rensen, Chu, or Day will make a diagnosis. We will sometimes perform palliative care and schedule your treatment for another day. Other times, we may treat you on the same day. It all depends on your unique situation and the nature of your emergency.

If you are experiencing severe dental pain, do not hesitate to call us. We can treat infections, decay, abscesses, immediately, and relieve any discomfort.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies With Prevention

Most dental emergencies can be prevented with proper oral care and regular visits to your dentist. Poor oral hygiene or inconsistent visits to the dentist may be the perfect scenario for decay, infection, or more to set in. At Central Park Dental Clinic, we believe that educating our patients on the importance of oral health and the dangers of neglecting it can inspire them to be more active in their health care. By practicing some important preventive tips, you may be able to enjoy your teeth for many years.

A daily routine of daily brushing and flossing—making sure to brush your teeth for two minutes—keeps your teeth polished and healthy. Scheduling routine dental cleanings and exams with Dr. Roger Chan, Dr. Jennifer Rensen, Dr. Fanny Chu, or Dr. John Day allows us to examine your teeth and gums to check for dental abnormalities.

During your visits with us, we will also examine any dental prosthetics like fillings, dental crowns, bridges, dental implants, or dentures.

Welcoming New Patients in the Metrotown Area

We understand that you may be new to the area or in between dental homes. We want you to know that we are here to support you.

We welcome new patients to our practice and will help get you on the path to good oral health. We take pride in providing excellent dental care to all of the members of our community. At Central Park Dental Clinic, we understand that a dental emergency can be a stressful experience. If you are a new patient, we hope you continue seeing us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Illustration of tooth next to a first aid kit | Dentist Burnaby BCWhile it is an uncommon situation, sometimes a fall or physical contact with another person will result in a tooth being displaced. Usually, these situations will be accompanied by cuts, swelling, bruises, and pain. Most of these situations require immediate attention from a dentist who can re-position a tooth/ the teeth if possible, like our dental team at our Burnaby clinic. An examination by a medical doctor is also appropriate to treat any facial wounds or to provide updated tetanus vaccination.

If a displaced tooth happened when you are unable to be seen by any medical personal immediately, you may attempt to rinse off any contaminants and place the tooth in milk or saliva until you can be seen. Unfortunately, the survivability of such a tooth outside the mouth decreases rapidly.

Contact Our Burnaby BC Dental Clinic

Even if a tooth is successfully re-positioned by a dentist in a short amount of time, the likelihood of other future treatments is very high. Root canal treatment is almost always necessary. Ankylosis (a condition whereby the tooth becomes fused to the bone) is also highly probable, requiring future extraction and tooth replacement. So careful follow up at Central Park Dental Clinic beyond emergency treatment is needed.

Woman using a ice pack on her sore jawFirst, you have to distinguish between a dental emergency and a dental incident. A dental incident includes things like a tooth that has chipped or a temporary crown that has fallen off. A chipped tooth that is sharp to the tongue and not causing pain in the tooth itself is generally not considered a dental emergency. If a broken tooth is sharp to the tongue, you can generally place a piece of (chewed up) gum around the sharp edges and wait until the next day to have the tooth looked at. If a temporary crown has fallen off, the simplest thing to do is to avoid chewing on the tooth to minimize potential damage. These situations usually do not require immediate attention.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency

A true dental emergency involves a tooth that has been displaced from trauma, an infection that is rapidly developing, or a suddenly developing pain that is not relenting. All of these scenarios involve potentially tooth or life-threatening situations that are best seen by a dentist immediately. Our Burnaby, BC dental clinic always makes time for true emergencies. If it is after hours, our office will provide a contact number from our dentists who can assess you over the phone as best as possible. Fortunately, most cases can be dealt with by prescription medications until definitive treatment is provided.

Contact Our Burnaby BC Dental Clinic

If you are unable to immediately get in touch with your dentist, the best place to go would be your local hospital where they can deal with trauma and infection cases effectively. In the case of trauma, they can also provide treatment for facial wounds and update tetanus shots as required. Please contact Central Park Dental Clinic if you have any more concerns on emergency dental care in the Burnaby area.

Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency

  • If you have a traumatic injury to the face, get to the emergency room instead—your dentist can be notified.
  • If you have lost your tooth, bring it to your emergency appointment—it may be salvageable.
