Mother, father, daughter, and sonIt’s always important to consider your oral health, but even more important during flu season because a healthy mouth can help you recover faster.

As your dentist in Burnaby, BC, we want to make sure that you have the best tips to protect your teeth and your body when it seems everyone is sick.

Cover Your Mouth and Wash Your Hands

If you are sick or trying to avoid sickness, covering your mouth when you cough and sneeze can help. Also be sure to wash your hands – a lot. If you think about it, trolleys and hand baskets at the market have thousands of hands on them every day. Trains are also a haven for spreading disease. It’s a good practise to wash your hands after touching anything – door handles, faucets and anything else you come in contact with.

Rinse if You Vomit

The stomach acid passing through your mouth can deteriorate teeth, but brushing your teeth right away can cause additional damage to enamel. Rinse with plain water and swish it around your mouth immediately after. You can brush your teeth in about 30 minutes when saliva restores the natural pH of your mouth.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plain water is best when you are sick because many electrolyte drinks contain sugar, which contributes to decay. Being ill can lead to dehydration, making you more susceptible to periodontal disease and dental decay.

Dental Insurance formIf you have ever wondered about the disconnect between dental and medical insurance, you are not alone. A recent news story discusses dentistry’s rough beginning – when your local barber was responsible for extracting teeth in addition to cutting hair.

As research finds more links between overall health and oral health, we see that the mouth is truly the gateway to the rest of the body and should be treated accordingly.

Dental Insurance

Most dental insurance plans cover preventive dentistry as well as basic care, but more complex procedures may only receive partial coverage, leaving patients with out-of-pocket expenses. The basic concept is that preventive dentistry will keep you healthy and complex procedures should only be occasionally necessary. In an ideal world, this is a noble idea. Biology often has other plans in mind. Even with preventive care, breaking a tooth or developing an infection might still occur, leaving a number of questions about the future of your smile and your wallet.

Close Up of patient getting fillingWe use the latest detection technology to regularly screen your teeth for signs of decay. Decay begins because bacteria create an acidic environment and soften the protective outer shell of your tooth, known as enamel.

When treated early, you may only need a tooth-coloured filling to protect your teeth. That is why regular screening and preventive treatments are so important! When we have the chance to examine your teeth at least twice yearly, we can stop many problems before they even start.

Dental Fillings Process in Burnaby

Before we place a filling, one of our gentle dentists will remove all signs of decay and bacteria. Once we remove decay from your tooth, we need to seal and protect the area with tooth-coloured composite to prevent food particles and bacteria from re-entering your tooth.

Composite comes in a variety of shades and we can match it to your tooth, making your filling virtually undetectable. During the final steps of your treatment, we will polish your filling and shape it so that it feels comfortable and looks completely natural.

When left untreated, cavities can travel into the area of your tooth that houses your nerve and can cause you pain, potentially creating the need for a root canal or crown. Early treatment can save you time, hassle, and money!

man smiling in dental chairDespite the way dentists are depicted in movies and the media, the last thing we want to do is to hurt our patients! At Central Park Dental Clinic, we make patient comfort a priority because we know that dentistry does not have to be painful.

Gentle Dentistry in V5H 1Y8

When you receive treatment in our office, we spend a little extra time talking to you about any dental anxiety you may have and helping you to relax. Our dentists are extremely gentle and give injections slowly because the pain from anesthesia can be decreased with a slower injection.

We make sure we give the medication time to take effect, and we will test the area several times to make sure you are completely numb.

When it comes to your actual procedure, you can count on our dentists to have a gentle touch. You are always in control of your own appointment, so if you ever feel discomfort, we encourage you to speak up – even if that means just raising your hand. We can always take a few extra moments to make sure you don’t feel a thing.

BOTOX Cosmetic

woman smiling with white background If you are happy with the way your smile looks, why not improve the rest of your look with BOTOX treatments? BOTOX Cosmetic treatments at our Burnaby, BC dental clinic help patients look refreshed and younger.

Issues that BOTOX Treatments Can Help With

BOTOX treatments are particularly well-suited for:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet (lines at the outside corners of the eyes)
  • Frown lines (including the “angry 11” that forms above the nose and between the eyebrows)
  • Lines around the lips

BOTOX is administered via injection with a very fine needle into specific muscles. There is minimal discomfort during treatment, and it generally takes about three to seven days before its effects are visible. Tips for successful treatment include avoiding alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications a week before undergoing the procedure.

The effects of BOTOX for cosmetic treatment generally lasts four to six months. The muscles that were paralysed by the injection gradually begin to relax, and you may need follow-up treatment.

Possible Side Effects of BOTOX

Side effects with BOTOX are minimal, with temporary bruising as the most common. A minority of people get headaches after treatment, but this is uncommon. Drooping around the injection site can also happen if you rub the area, so it’s best to keep your hands away in the days following treatment.

man holding jaw from pain If you suffer from headaches, jaw pain, or have an interest in improving the appearance of your face, you have probably heard of BOTOX Cosmetic. Many of our patients enjoy the benefits that BOTOX® treatment offers.

BOTOX® can treat headaches, jaw pain, and correct the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, and near the mouth without the use of fillers.

BOTOX Treatment in Burnaby

It works by relaxing the muscles in a targeted area. When used properly, you will not have to worry about a “frozen face” appearance.

We will first make small marks to identify the areas which may benefit from BOTOX® treatment. The idea of injections may cause uneasiness with some patients, but BOTOX® injections are tolerated well by most patients and cause little post-treatment discomfort.

Within a few days to a week after your treatment, you will begin to notice a subtle difference where BOTOX® was applied. Muscle tension will reduce, allowing those muscles to relax and smooth out. For most patients, the positive effects of BOTOX® last about four to six months when you may begin to feel it wearing out. So that you can continue to enjoy the benefits, we invite you to come back in for a maintenance treatment.

Woman holding jaw in pain If you are considering BOTOX cosmetic treatment in Burnaby, BC choosing to have anti-wrinkle injections with a dentist offers many benefits over those in salons, spas, and aesthetician clinics.

Dentists have an in-depth knowledge of the muscle structure of the face – much more anatomy education than aestheticians and non-dental practitioners receive. Because BOTOX injections relax the muscles of the face and head, this knowledge can give you more precise results without any unwanted side effects.

How Botox Can Be Used in Dentistry

A botox dentist also uses this treatment for a number of non-cosmetic procedures, including headache treatment, migraines and reliving facial tension that is associated with hyper-expression and device use.

Painful jaw muscles and joints often stem from TMJ disorders or night time teeth clenching and grinding. By reducing the power of those jaw muscles, you can avoid joint discomfort.

BOTOX is entirely reversible. It lasts for approximately four to six months, and then re-treatment is recommended to keep your new, smooth appearance. BOTOX relaxes the underlying muscles that move the skin in expressions such as concentration, smiling and frowning, and when using computers.

Clear Aligners

Woman smiling If you’re considering braces, Clear Aligner or Invisalign are great options. The benefits of Invisalign and Clear Aligner, in fact, are superior to previous-era braces; also known as metal braces.

With Invisalign or Clear Aligners, you have none of the bulky wires or metal that can snag. Clear orthodontics are also aesthetically appealing because they are invisible!

What to Expect From Invisalign Treatments

Invisalign and Clear Aligner trays are custom designed to fit the unique contours of your mouth. They can even be removed for optimal brushing and flossing, and you don’t have to wear them when you eat!

Invisible braces are right for you if you want to enhance your smile by straightening teeth that are crooked. They also work to close gaps between teeth over time.

Invisalign Can Help With Orthodontic Relapse

Additionally, Invisalign and Clear Aligners are useful in the treatment of orthodontic relapse, a condition that means your teeth are drifting following a previous orthodontic procedure or after failing to wear your retainer as prescribed.

Ultimately, our skilled dentists at Central Park Dental Clinic will decide whether Invisalign or Clear Aligners are right for you after a comprehensive oral assessment.

Woman using clear braces In case you haven’t heard, Invisalign is a nearly invisible teeth straightening option with orthodontics that do not require brackets and wires. Many of our adult patients opt for Invisalign in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic so they can avoid the inconvenience of a limited diet and having to clean around hardware after each meal.

What Alignment Issues Invisalign Can Treat

Invisalign works well for most orthodontic conditions that impact the appearance and function of your smile, including overcrowding and overlapping, and unevenly spaced teeth. Treatment times are similar to traditional orthodontics and sometimes even a bit shorter, which pleases our patients. Since aligners are smooth, removable, and clear, the impact on your daily life is minor.

Invisalign Process

It’s easier to keep teeth clean, to eat your favourite foods, and to keep your orthodontics a secret. All you need to do is wear aligners most of the day (about 22 hours) and keep your teeth and aligners clean. Every two weeks, you will trade in your aligner trays for a new set that will take you one step closer to your goal of having a straight smile!

Clear Braces | Central Park Dental ClinicClear aligners are an innovative way to provide orthodontic treatment without the need for brackets and wires. This is important to many of our patients who feel that traditional orthodontic treatment may not be ideal because of their lifestyle or how they will look with braces on their teeth.

Some adult and older teen patients would prefer to live with a crooked smile rather than spend years in braces. We offer a solution!

Clear Aligners in Burnaby

Invisible braces provide a welcome alternative for many patients in our Burnaby, BC dental office. Instead of using brackets and an adjustable wire to move your teeth, a series of clear, plastic aligner trays will gradually move your teeth into ideal alignment. Clear aligners are smooth, and many patients find them more comfortable.

Each set of aligner trays is one step closer to a straight, comfortable smile.

An evaluation will determine if you are a candidate for clear aligners. If you are, we will gather data to plan your treatment. Impressions, x-rays, and photographs will help our dentists plan your treatment in a way that delivers beautiful and comfortable results. It is important that your teeth come together correctly once treatment is complete so that your bite is comfortable and does not wear prematurely.

We will also make an orthodontic retainer to hold your teeth in place.

Woman smiling If you’re an adult who has crooked teeth, you may be thinking about orthodontic treatment, but what you’re probably not thinking about is a mouthful of metal! That is why we offer Invisalign clear aligners for adults who want a discreet, comfortable teeth-straightening option.

Orthodontic Treatments in V5H 1Y8

Invisalign clear aligners are the perfect orthodontic treatment for busy adults. There are no metal brackets and wires, just smooth crystal-clear aligners that fit snugly over your teeth like a mouth guard, so most people won’t notice you are wearing them.

Better yet, you can take the aligners out so you can brush and floss easily and continue to eat all your favorite foods. Just remember to wear Invisalign for at least 22 hours each day so you can achieve the fastest results. Adults who wear their aligners as instructed see results in as little as 12 months!

Clear Aligners

And while Invisalign treatment will improve the appearance of your smile, it also has oral health benefits. Crooked or crowded teeth make brushing and flossing a challenge, and inadequate oral hygiene often leads to decay and gum disease that threaten your overall oral health.

Dental Crowns

Not necessarily. We recommend a crown when the visible part of your tooth is at risk of fracture during a function, like eating. These situations include teeth with large fillings, Diagram of a root canal weak cusps, and also teeth with significant cracks. Crowns completely cover the exposed part of your tooth and provide added stability.

Teeth that have had root canal treatment often require a dental crown because of the need to remove a significant amount of tooth structure. Plus, removing the nerve can cause teeth to become brittle after root canal treatment.

However, a broken tooth that is responding normally and without infection can often be restored with a crown only, and many of such teeth are restored successfully to provide many years of service.

Root Canals in Burnaby

Root canals are prescribed in situations where the nerves of the teeth are compromised or an infection exists. Large cavities and broken areas may be very close to the nerves of the teeth. While they may be responding normally and without infection now, the nerves of a small number of teeth may die in the course of function or even the simple preparation of teeth for a crown. The good news is that the vast majority of these teeth can have root canal treatment done through the crowns without replacing them.

Dental Crowns in burnabyIf you have recently learned that you need dental crowns in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, you might be wondering how Dr. Chan came to this recommendation. A few conditions may lead to the need for a dental crown to preserve your natural tooth.

A Broken or Fractured Tooth

If your tooth sustained damage from chewing or grinding your teeth and part of it broke off, a dental crown can protect and prevent any continued damage. A fracture line in the tooth can also be catastrophic because if your tooth splits down the middle or breaks off at the gumline, an extraction may be the only option.

A Tooth with Extensive Caries

Deep decay might mean that fillings cannot provide enough protection and the tooth could crumble or break apart. Fillings are great for sealing teeth, but not great protectors, especially when it comes to the molars, which absorb most of the force from chewing.

How To Replace a Large Silver Filling in Burnaby

If you are having trouble with an old restoration or seeking cosmetic treatment to replacing metal dentistry with modern tooth-coloured options, a crown may be required to replace large amalgam fillings effectively and aesthetically.

Protecting a Root Canal Tooth

Once you have a root canal, the tooth may become brittle. A dental crown will protect your tooth and promote longevity.

When it comes to restorative dentistry in our Burnaby, BC dental office, we make recommendations based on your individual needs. Each dental restoration performs a specific purpose, and they are not typically interchangeable. Of course, if you have multiple options available, we will explain each and help you make a decision that works best for you, your health goals, and your budget.

Restorative Dentistry Treatments in Burnaby

Fillings – The tooth-coloured fillings we use in our office are for repairing teeth after mild to moderate instances of decay. We can also use composite, the material used in fillings, dental bridge diagram to make small cosmetic repairs to teeth including filling in narrow gaps, chips, and reshaping teeth.

Crowns – A dental crown provides more protection than a filling by completely encasing your remaining tooth structure after damage due to significant decay, cracks, fractures, or after root canal therapy.

Inlays and Onlays – Inlays and onlays are custom fillings made from porcelain and cover more of the tooth structure. They seal the tooth and blend in with the colour of your smile.

Dental bridges – Dental bridges are designed to replace a missing tooth by filling the gap in your smile. An artificial tooth anchored between two crowns can keep your remaining natural teeth from shifting toward the gap left after an extraction or tooth loss.

Dental Emergencies

Woman using a ice pack on her sore jawFirst, you have to distinguish between a dental emergency and a dental incident. A dental incident includes things like a tooth that has chipped or a temporary crown that has fallen off. A chipped tooth that is sharp to the tongue and not causing pain in the tooth itself is generally not considered a dental emergency. If a broken tooth is sharp to the tongue, you can generally place a piece of (chewed up) gum around the sharp edges and wait until the next day to have the tooth looked at. If a temporary crown has fallen off, the simplest thing to do is to avoid chewing on the tooth to minimize potential damage. These situations usually do not require immediate attention.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency

A true dental emergency involves a tooth that has been displaced from trauma, an infection that is rapidly developing, or a suddenly developing pain that is not relenting. All of these scenarios involve potentially tooth or life-threatening situations that are best seen by a dentist immediately. Our Burnaby, BC dental clinic always makes time for true emergencies. If it is after hours, our office will provide a contact number from our dentists who can assess you over the phone as best as possible. Fortunately, most cases can be dealt with by prescription medications until definitive treatment is provided.

Contact Our Burnaby BC Dental Clinic

If you are unable to immediately get in touch with your dentist, the best place to go would be your local hospital where they can deal with trauma and infection cases effectively. In the case of trauma, they can also provide treatment for facial wounds and update tetanus shots as required. Please contact Central Park Dental Clinic if you have any more concerns on emergency dental care in the Burnaby area.

Person holding cheek with toothache | Dentist Burnaby BCDental emergencies can be scary and disruptive to your schedule. At Central Park Dental Clinic we understand these issues, which is why we strive to set aside space for emergency dental situations each day.

Dental Emergencies

Oral health emergencies may include the following:

  • Dental injury, which results in severe bleeding or tooth loss
  • Broken tooth
  • Extreme dental pain
  • Swelling in the jaw or face
  • Dental pain with fever

Dental inconveniences that can wait a few days include:

  • Mild tooth pain without fever
  • Loose filling
  • A few drops of blood following a minor injury—an elbow jab for example.

Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, call our Burnaby, BC office as soon as possible, and our dentists will determine whether your situation requires immediate attention. If the emergency happens after hours, our dentist will also decide whether or not you need to be seen immediately or the next day.

In the meantime, do the following:

  • If you have a traumatic injury to the face, get to the emergency room instead—your dentist can be notified.
  • If you have lost your tooth, bring it to your emergency appointment—it may be salvageable.

We routinely treat emergency situations and will make every effort to save your tooth or teeth and preserve your smile.

Call our Burnaby BC Dental Clinic

Contact our Burnaby, BC dental office immediately if you think you may be experiencing a dental emergency, and let our emergency dentist assess your situation!

Illustration of tooth next to a first aid kit | Dentist Burnaby BCWhile it is an uncommon situation, sometimes a fall or physical contact with another person will result in a tooth being displaced. Usually, these situations will be accompanied by cuts, swelling, bruises, and pain. Most of these situations require immediate attention from a dentist who can re-position a tooth/ the teeth if possible, like our dental team at our Burnaby clinic. An examination by a medical doctor is also appropriate to treat any facial wounds or to provide updated tetanus vaccination.

If a displaced tooth happened when you are unable to be seen by any medical personal immediately, you may attempt to rinse off any contaminants and place the tooth in milk or saliva until you can be seen. Unfortunately, the survivability of such a tooth outside the mouth decreases rapidly.

Contact Our Burnaby BC Dental Clinic

Even if a tooth is successfully re-positioned by a dentist in a short amount of time, the likelihood of other future treatments is very high. Root canal treatment is almost always necessary. Ankylosis (a condition whereby the tooth becomes fused to the bone) is also highly probable, requiring future extraction and tooth replacement. So careful follow up at Central Park Dental Clinic beyond emergency treatment is needed.

Dental Extractions

Sometimes, teeth treated with root canal therapy develop brittle roots, calling for gentle and precise extraction. Your dentist wants to remove the tooth cleanly while preserving the bone. This approach helps make the space ready for a possible dental implant.

What Is a Root Canal Burnaby, BC?

A root canal treatment removes infected pulp and tissues from the central canal of a tooth. Without treatment, the infection typically becomes painful, and the gum swells. You may also notice a blister on the gum near the pain source. A root canal treatment gets rid of the pain and swelling, and then we retore the tooth’s structure with a dental crown.

If the infection is severe and the tooth breaks below the gumline, your dentist may talk to you about extraction instead of treatment followed by tooth replacement. Tooth replacement is essential to maintain your smile and oral health.

Gentle Tooth Extractions Near Me

If your treated tooth requires extraction, we provide gentle treatment in a relaxing environment. We also ensure the treatment site is numb before starting work.

For more information about gentle dental extractions or to arrange a consultation with the dentist, give us a call today.

man holding jaw from toothacheIf you suspect you need a dental extraction, contacting your Burnaby, BC dentist is the best way to get a definitive answer. At Central Park Dental Clinic, we never recommend an extraction lightly. Typically, other than the routine removal of wisdom teeth, an extraction is often the last resort because it is usually simpler and less expensive to take care of the teeth you already have.

Dental Issues That May Require a Dental Extraction

Here are some of the common conditions that require a dental extraction:

  • Untreatable infection
  • Split or severely broken tooth
  • Periodontitis
  • Deep decay
  • Unresolved pain
  • Unsuccessful root canal treatment

When you arrive in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, we often begin by taking an x-ray of the area to determine the status of the tooth. Dr. Chan will then discuss any conditions he identified and discuss all of your treatment options with you.

Comfortable Tooth Extractions in Burnaby

If you do require a dental extraction, we want to reassure you that we always prioritise patient comfort and will ensure that your procedure is pain-free by using effective anaesthetic techniques and following up with your surgical care to make sure you heal properly.

When appropriate, we offer a number of tooth-replacement options for patients to choose from.

Dental Extraction Patients who come to us often believe that extraction is the only option to resolve a painful or diseased tooth. In reality, dental extraction is our last treatment recommendation at our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, and we only remove a damaged tooth when root canals, dental crowns, and other restorative options fail.

When a Dental Extraction Might Be Necessary

Some of the reasons we might need to remove a damaged tooth include:

  • Unresponsive to root canal treatment
  • Broken at or below the gumline
  • Problematic wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Resistant to treatments that relieve pain
  • When planning for complete dentures

Before suggesting a dental extraction, our Burnaby, BC dental team will evaluate the tooth and potential treatment options. We will go over all of these options, along with their benefits, limitations, and risks at your consultation appointment. We use education aids, such as intraoral cameras and x-rays to show you your own tooth. Having all of the information empowers our patients to make an educated choice that works best for their smiles.

If you do require an extraction that leaves a gap in your smile, we offer plenty of natural-looking options to give you your smile back.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants | Central Park Dental ClinicWhen considering tooth replacement options, budget is a concern for most people. Fixed bridges, dental implants, or partial dentures – so many options to choose from!

At Central Park Dental Clinic, we work with all private and state insurance plans to assist with the cost of your dental expenses. Dental implants are no different. When compared to the cost of dental bridges and partial dentures, dental implants are actually comparable, while providing many patients with a higher level of convenience and stability.

Dental implants actually integrate with your natural bone, so you can enjoy a life free of dietary restrictions, dentures that can move, and fixed bridges that are sometimes tough to keep clean. When opting for dental implants in our Burnaby, BC dental office, our patients report a high level of satisfaction.

High-Quality Dental Implants in Burnaby

Dr. Chan relies on high-quality materials, training, experience, and technology to ensure that our patients achieve an excellent outcome. In order to determine if dental implants are right for you, contact our Burnaby, BC dental office to schedule a comprehensive oral exam that will allow Dr. Chan to make a recommendation that works well for your smile. Of course, if you ever have any questions about the cost of your treatment, we are always happy to help.

Diagram of Dental Implants | Dentist Burnaby BCThe longevity of your natural teeth and dentistry depends a lot on how well you take care of your teeth and gums. While dental implants do not sustain decay like natural teeth, the surrounding gum tissue can still develop periodontal disease.

Situations That Can Affect the Longevity of Your Dental Implants

The danger of periodontal disease is that it can lead to bone loss, which destabilizes dental implants and can cause them to fail. The good news is that dental implants are easy to take care of – brush and floss normally and don’t forget to maintain your dental exams and cleanings. If you notice the tissue around your dental implant is red, sensitive, or swollen, contact us, and we can help.

Another danger for dental implants is a clenching and grinding habit, known as bruxism. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can protect your implant, along with your dentistry, from damage.

Just like your natural teeth, biting into something that is hard – like ice or an olive pit – can damage the dental implant crown. If your crown breaks or falls out, contact our clinic right away to arrange a repair or replacement.

Benefits of Dental Implants in Burnaby

Many patients choose to replace missing teeth with dental implants in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic. The reason for this is that dental implants offer a few benefits that go above and beyond either bridges or dentures.

Stability – Dental implants integrate fully with your bone and will not move or shift, as long as they remain healthy.

Healthy bone – Dental implants help to keep the bone from deteriorating in a process called resorption. Dental implants replace the entire tooth structure – including the root. Healthy roots stimulate bone and assist in maintaining its density.

Aesthetics – In addition to the practical benefits of choosing dental implants, they also look like your natural teeth. Dr. Roger Chan or Dr. Jennifer Rensen will design a tooth that looks like your natural teeth in both shape and colour.

The Dental Implant Process in Burnaby

Here are some things to keep in mind regarding the dental implant process:

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. Any surgery can lead to a number of concerns about recovery. Most patients tolerate dental implant surgery well and recover completely within a week or two.

Results are not instant. Meticulous planning, precise placement, and custom restorative work all take time. While we can sometimes place immediate dental implants, the process usually requires a few months to complete. This is because dental implants integrate with your bone over the course of the healing process.

Good hygiene is essential. Periodontal disease often leads to bone loss, which puts your dental implant at risk. Don’t shortchange yourself when it comes to brushing and flossing your teeth. Make sure to keep regular dental appointments, as well. We will monitor the health of your implant to ensure its longevity.

Dentures have been around for a long time, and they are still a practical and affordable solution to tooth loss. However, dentures have drawbacks, especially when compared to dental implants.

Let’s look at how dentures and implants work and a few reasons you should choose dental implants over dentures.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth on an arch or plate that stand in for missing teeth. A denture can be partial for partial tooth loss or complete when all teeth are missing.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants in Burnaby, BC Compared with Dentures

Oral Health Benefits

Dentures fill in for missing teeth, but they do not guard against bone loss in the jaw or prevent tooth migration—both of which can lead to oral health complications and changes to the lower facial profile. Tooth migration can also impact your bite over time.

In contrast, dental implants stimulate the jawbone to remain healthy and keep your teeth from shifting toward smile gaps.

Function and Stability

Dentures sit on the gum, relying on bone, suction, and gravity for support. Unfortunately, this can mean slippage or rocking, both of which can impact chewing and speaking.

On the other hand, dental implants are fixed to the jaw with artificial tooth roots. As a result, speaking and chewing are simplified. In fact, you’re not likely to think about your implants when you’re doing either!

Tooth Replacement Longevity

Because jawbones shrink when tooth roots are missing, dentures that fit snuggly at first loosen over time. This loosening means goopy denture adhesives and dental office visits for relines. Before you know it, it will be time for a new denture.

Dental implants can last for years, decades, and even for life in some cases. In addition, they’ll never require relines or adhesives for support.

For best results, dentures require overnight soaks in a denture bath. You can also purchase a special cleaning brush and denture paste to clean the prosthetic during the day. Many patients also make appointments with the dentist to have their dentures professionally cleaned in the dental office.

Dental implant upkeep is more straightforward. For example, if you brushed, flossed, and visited your dentist regularly before implants, you simply keep doing these things. No added steps are required.

Implant-Supported Dentures in Burnaby, BC

Our dentist offers implant-supported dentures if you have complete or significant tooth loss. With this option, you have the practicality of dentures with the many benefits of dental implants.

Implant-supported dentures usually require four to six implants, and this approach is typically less expensive than an implant for every lost tooth.

Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Right for You?

Most dentists prefer dental implants because they are the next best thing to natural teeth. They preserve bone, stabilize your bite, and promote ongoing oral health. However, we offer both quality dentures and dental implants for our patients.

We invite you to schedule a consultation with our dentist to learn which tooth replacement option is best for your lifestyle and budget.

Dental Implant Diagram | Central Park Dental ClinicOne of our patients’ favourite benefits of dental implants is that they look natural – just like your other teeth. Dr. Chan will custom design the dental crown to blend in perfectly and cover the top of your dental implant. No metal components will be visible when you opt for dental implants in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic.

Dental implants do require some precise planning steps to consider:

Do you have sufficient bone to support the dental implant and crown, and the force caused by chewing?

If not, bone grafting is a great option that improves the bone quality and opens the door for dental implants as a treatment option for just about any patient.

What is the ideal location for your dental implant?

The implant post and crown require precise positioning. We will take x-rays and create a surgical guide to ensure ideal placement.

Are you able to care for your teeth, gums and dental implant properly?

We will discuss how to care for your teeth and gums. Your dental implant requires much the same care.

Dentures and Partials

Dentistry is a highly personal decision between you and your dentists. At Central Park Dental Clinic, each of our dentists is dedicated to providing highly personalised dentistry that meets your goals. We are not in the business of selling one procedure over the other but will go over the pros and cons of each type of treatment and help you decide which dentalDentures | Central Park Dental Clinic service will work best for you.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are effective for replacing one or more missing teeth with a standalone treatment that replaces both the root of your tooth and the tooth itself. This is an effective tooth-replacement option that also helps to retain your bone. We place and restore dental implants in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic.

Dentures in Burnaby BC

Dentures have the benefit of replacing multiple teeth at once and are often more affordable than having a dozen or more dental implants. While dentures do not assist with bone retention, they have improved in quality over the last decade and now fit more comfortably and look more attractive than ever.

If you are a person who likes the best of both worlds, implant-retained dentures offer the security and stability of dental implants with the affordability of dentures. Four or more dental implants lock your denture in place, so it doesn’t move when you’re eating or kissing your sweetheart, saving you from a potentially embarrassing moment.

Partial DenturesAt Central Park Dental Clinic, we understand the discomfort of missing one or more teeth and are happy to guide you through your teeth replacement options.

What Is a Partial Denture?

A partial denture is a removable, natural-looking dental device attached to gum-colored bases. Partial dentures are an excellent tooth replacement option that fits between your natural teeth and matches the look and shade of the rest of your smile. Since they are made from a combination of metal and acrylic, they are comfortable and blend in with your existing teeth, yet remain strong enough to handle chewing and speaking. We offer partial and complete dentures in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic.

What Are the Benefits of Partial Dentures From Our Burnaby Clinic?

Partial dentures help by improving your speech and allowing for a more pleasant eating experience. If you are missing one or more teeth, teeth may shift over time, and soft tissue can shrink near the missing tooth.

This can change your appearance over time and can affect the surrounding teeth. Partial dentures protect the architecture of your mouth, from your gums to your jawbone to your facial muscles and more. Over time, adjustments may be needed to ensure there are no sore spots or irritation. With maintenance and upkeep, partial dentures can give you confidence in your healthy, complete smile.

LANAP Laser Gum Treatment

The cost of the laser surgery is about the same as traditional surgery, but will depend on the severity and complexity of your condition. At your initial consultation, we can identify your specific situation, and give you an estimate of what your costs would be.

Financial Information in Our Burnaby Dental Clinic

We will work with you to create a financial arrangement that is appropriate for your circumstances. Some dental insurance plans may cover part of your treatment.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, usually presents with the following signs:

  • Bleeding after brushing and flossing
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Teeth that look elongated because of gum recession
  • Loose or shifting teeth

If you have any of these signs, your gum disease may already be advanced, and you need immediate treatment to get the condition under control.

Laser Gum Surgery in V5H 1Y8

At our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, we offer laser gum surgery using the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), which provides several benefits for our patients:

  • Comfort—Laser surgery means we don’t have to cut the gums, so the procedure is more comfortable for patients during and after.
  • Faster healing times—Without cutting there is no need for stitches, so the healing process is much quicker.
  • Precision—Unlike traditional gum treatment, LANAP laser gum treatment at our Burnaby, BC dental clinic enables us to remove diseased tissue without having to cut into the gums.
  • Stimulation—The heat of the laser promotes tissue regeneration.

The procedure will take place over a couple of two-hour appointments; we’ll do one-half of your mouth at one appointment and the other half at the second appointment. Afterward, we’ll continue to monitor your progress with follow-up visits to ensure your gum disease is resolved.

Gum disease is a serious condition that affects many people. Often it presents without symptoms, and many times, people don’t realize they have gum disease. By the time symptoms start to appear, the disease might be too far gone for a deep cleaning. Because gum disease has been connected to serious conditions, including heart disease, respiratory diseases, certain cancers, and diabetes, it’s important to get treatment. Gum disease is also one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults.

LANAP Treatment in Burnaby

In the past, the only option to treat serious gum disease was through surgery. But now we are happy to offer LANAP treatment in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic. Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure uses lasers rather than a scalpel to treat advanced gum disease.

We usually perform the procedure here in our dental clinic using a local anesthesia. Dr. Roger Chan, who has received additional training to perform the LANAP procedure, will insert the lasers between the tooth and gum, clearing away infection without having to cut into the gums. He will clean the tooth roots with the laser, and once those are free of tartar and plaque, will use the laser to create a blood clot to seal the pockets around the gum.

Contact Central Park Dental Clinic

If you are suffering from advanced-stage gum disease and want to learn more about LANAP treatment to help restore your oral health, we welcome you to our Burnaby, BC dental clinic.

It’s important to treat advanced-stage gum disease. Not only do you put your oral health at risk by ignoring it—gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss among adults—but you also open yourself up to other health risks. Many studies are now connecting the health of your mouth with the rest of your body. Some studies show that gum disease can contribute to serious medical conditions, including stroke, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and some cancers.

When gum disease is in its advanced stage, patients used to have few options. Surgical procedures that cut into the gum tissue to remove the infection were the only options. Bu today’s patients have the benefit of technology in the form of lasers.

Advantages of LANAP Laser Surgery

One of the most crucial advantages of LANAP laser surgery for our Burnaby, BC dental patients is that recovery times are much easier than traditional cut-and-sew surgery. Not only is there very little downtime after the procedure, but there is also:

  • Less bleeding
  • Less gum loss
  • Less pain
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less sensitivity
  • Less swelling

Most patients also report faster and more comfortable healing times.

Laser Periodontal Therapy in Burnaby

For patients who have disease limited to a certain section of the mouth or, for various reasons, could not have or does not want the entire mouth treated, we have seen clinical benefits from Laser Periodontal Therapy (LPT), which is applied to certain sections of the mouth.

Root Canal Therapy

Diagram of root canal procedurePatients who worry about root canal pain are in for a pleasant surprise. The dental procedure is virtually pain-free! Many people who visit our Burnaby dental clinic associate root canal therapy with pain, but it’s generally pain that brings people in. The pain is caused by an infection deep within the tooth root, and a root canal will actually relieve the pain and remove the infection.

Comfortable Root Canal Treatment in Burnaby

The root canal procedure is a common one that is no worse than getting an average filling—and it can save your infected tooth from extraction. Once our dentists have determined a root canal is necessary, the area to be treated will be thoroughly numbed. That alone will probably help with the pain you are feeling.

Root Canal Procedure

When we are certain you are comfortable, we will make a tiny hole in the affected tooth and remove the infected tooth pulp. After thoroughly cleaning the tooth root and saturating it with an antibiotic, the area is plugged and sealed to prevent infection from spreading. In most cases, we will recommend a dental crown to protect, strengthen, and save the remaining tooth structure.

The area might be tender for a few days, but soon after your tooth should feel normal again, and you can chew normally.

Teeth and Gum Cleanings

Glass of WaterSuffering from dry mouth can be annoying and may even cause bad breath. Dry mouth happens as part of the aging process but can occur in patients of any age due to certain medications, smoking, or because of an underlying health issue. Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, cause dry mouth. Dehydration also contributes to dry mouth and makes it more difficult to keep teeth and gums healthy.

Saliva helps to prevent decay by breaking down foods and restoring the mouth to a regular pH level after eating or drinking. Saliva also protects the gums, which makes periodontal disease common among those with dry mouth.

What can you do to prevent it?

If you experience dry mouth, it’s a good time to talk to your dentist in Metrotown about your options. In the meantime, here are a few suggestions:

  • Sip water all day
  • If you smoke, consider quitting
  • Use a dry mouth rinse
  • Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste
  • Keep some sugar-free mints handy
  • Use a humidifier at night
  • Limit caffeine

Thorough Dental Cleanings

Every patient is different. For most healthy patients, a dental cleaning twice per year is enough to remove unwanted tartar and bacteria that can cause problems with your periodontal health. It also gives our team an opportunity to monitor any changes you may have in between dental appointments.

For patients who currently have periodontal disease or who have had it in the past, we may recommend more frequent dental cleanings because you will always be more susceptible to gum disease in the future and a professional dental cleaning is an effective way to keep this type of infection at bay.

Periodontal Exams in V5H 1Y8

Our hygienist will perform a periodontal exam, measuring the pocketing in your gums, to determine the frequency of your dental cleanings. When they make a recommendation, it is based on your unique needs at this time. We will always communicate with you so that you understand any treatment we recommend.

Even if you are overdue for your next dental cleaning in Burnaby, BC, give us a call. We can help you get back on track to great oral health.

Most healthy patients can see their dentist every six months for teeth cleaning and checkup and successfully maintain their excellent dental health.

However, if you struggle to manage gum disease, you may need extra preventive teeth cleanings throughout the year to keep your condition at bay. Unfortunately, there's no cure for gum disease, but these additional visits to your hygienist to keep your teeth clean and bacteria-free can help you manage your condition.

Gum disease is an infection of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. If you don't treat it, gum disease can cause damage to your teeth's support system, resulting in tooth loss. This condition is prevalent in adults over 30, so preventive checkups and teeth cleanings are the best way to protect your smile and dental health.

Routine visits to your Burnaby dentist can also save you from dealing with more costly treatment in the future. Your dentist will check your teeth and current restorations to make you aware of any concerns as early as possible. This can help you avoid costly and painful dental issues and keep you away from the dental chair.

If it's time for your next teeth cleaning and checkup, call your "dentist near me" in Burnaby at (604) 438-5261 to book your next appointment.

calendar with dental visit on it How often your dental visits should be is dependent upon your overall oral health, and that could potentially change over time.

Importance of Dental Cleanings in Burnaby

Most patients believe that dental visits every six months are sufficient for a healthy smile. For many patients, that might be true! For others, however, like patients who have periodontal disease, decay, or significant amounts of dentistry or those who suffer from certain medical conditions, we may recommend something more frequent to support your oral health.

How Oral Health Affects Your Overall Health

Changes in your overall health can affect your teeth and gums. Pregnancy, dry mouth, cancer treatments, and even certain medications can make it hard to keep your teeth clean and your gums infection-free. Our skilled hygiene team can make this process much easier with the proper professional dental cleaning, hygiene instruction, and product recommendations to support you.

If you have had gum disease in the past, that makes you more susceptible to it in the future, so even if you do not currently have an active infection, staying on top of your dental cleanings and exams is essential.

two young brothers brushing teeth We recommend to our patients to bring their children in for an examination by the age of 1 and subsequent every 6 months for a checkup. Children at this age have a keen sense of their surroundings and are very curious about the different things they see and feel. While we may or may not be able to do a complete examination, this gives a perfect opportunity for your children to familiarize themselves with their dental office environments. They can see, hear, smell, and touch different items while they are in the dental chair and react according to their personalities.

We ask our patients NOT to "prepare" their children prior to their visits to the dental office or use phrases like "it is not going to hurt" when talking to them about their dental appointments. Children are very perceptive and would wonder why Mom and Dad never "prepare" them before going out to eat or to swim but only before a medical or dental appointment. Even if such phrases are not used, they would often feel your apprehension if you yourself have ill feelings going to the dentist. It is often better to keep your answers brief when your children ask about their appointments and let them decide how they feel in the dental office.

What to Expect During a Child's Dental Appointment

These appointments allow us to screen for any unusual developmental patterns in your children early and answer your questions specifically pertaining to your children. If we discover nothing unusual about their development, these appointments allow your children to have "good" experiences at the dental office. If and when they do require treatment beyond the regular check-ups, they are at least familiar with the surroundings of the dental office, have developed a level of trust with the dentist and staff, and know from previous experiences that they will be treated well. Dental treatment is often much more difficult in unfamiliar surroundings and provided by strangers when your children are already in discomfort.

Woman holding hand in front of mouth Bad breath can be explained by something as simple as eating a meal heavy with garlic, onions, or spices. In those cases, however, the odor resolves over time and after brushing and flossing your teeth.

Causes of Halitosis

Chronic bad breath, called halitosis, can indicate a more serious underlying condition such as digestive issues, dry mouth, or the more common condition, periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease occurs when an infection develops between your teeth and gum tissue. Most often, gum disease occurs with neglect – either failure to take care of your teeth at home or missing too many professional dental cleanings. Even if you brush and floss at home, plaque and tartar still develop in hard to reach areas of your mouth.

Bad breath can impact your social and professional life by making it unpleasant for people to speak to you in close proximity. The bacteria that cause gum disease may also spread through kissing and sharing utensils or drinking glasses.

How To Treat Bad Breath

Here are some tips to address bad breath:

  • Brush and floss your teeth daily, including your tongue.
  • Schedule a dental cleaning and exam to determine proper treatment.
  • Drink enough water to support proper saliva production.
  • Stop tobacco use, which increases the likelihood of gum disease.
  • Rinse with a mouthwash designed to reduce dry mouth symptoms.

Woman checking breath by breathing in handWhen your gums bleed during brushing or flossing, it is your body’s way of telling you that there is a problem requiring your attention. Typically, bleeding gums are a symptom of a common, but serious, oral health condition called periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection in your gums caused by excessive plaque and bacteria around your gum line.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Some of the common symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Gum recession
  • Pocketing

Your gums should fit snugly against your teeth, creating a seal. In severe cases of periodontal disease, pockets form between your teeth and gums, creating a breeding ground for destructive bacteria, which only exacerbates your condition.

Periodontal Disease in Burnaby

Additionally, researchers have linked periodontal disease to illnesses such as heart disease. While more research is needed to determine the exact link, doctors agree that healthy gums are important in protecting your overall health.

The most common cause of periodontal disease is neglect. Failure to brush, floss, and have professional dental cleanings all contribute to developing gum disease. In recent years, researchers have discovered that the bacteria that cause gum disease are transmittable, especially between family members. This may indicate why conditions like periodontal disease and even cavities tend to run in families.

How long your dentistry and your natural teeth will last depends on you. When we provide dentistry and restorative work for patients, we recommend certain dental care routines to improve the longevity of your restorations so you can protect your investment.

Man smilingHow to Care for Your Dental Veneers

Here are some ways that you can prolong the life of your dental veneers:

Don’t skimp on brushing and flossing – Make sure you brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice daily and that you floss your teeth properly. This step alone can dramatically improve the length of time you can enjoy your porcelain veneers.

Follow the six-month rule – Having dental exams and cleanings at a minimum of every six months will help us help you. Even when you brush and floss, you can still develop tartar and decay. Regular dental exams will help minimize this problem and protect your smile.

Don’t chew that – Avoiding bad habits like crunching ice can protect your natural teeth and your dentistry. Veneers are strong, but you can damage them by biting down on hard substances.

Mind your grind – If you grind your teeth during sleep, opting for a nightguard will help minimize the damage your veneers suffer.

Woman getting veneers Veneers provide the most dramatic results as part of your cosmetic dentistry treatment plan. We provide beautiful dental veneers in our Burnaby, BC dental office as a solution to many aesthetic problems.

Adds Length to Worn Teeth

A chronic teeth grinding habit, called bruxism, can lead to worn down or short-looking teeth. Dental veneers add length so that your smile looks young and natural again.

Dental veneers can wear or break when constantly exposed to teeth grinding. Wearing a nightguard every night can protect them, along with your natural teeth.

Improves Tooth Colour

Medications, demineralisation, and deep stains may keep you from smiling. Veneers completely cover teeth and can improve colour. In some cases, teeth whitening before you have veneers will give you even better results.

Close Gaps Between Teeth

A gap between teeth can be embarrassing, but having braces seems a bit extreme. In some cases, porcelain veneers can close gaps between teeth without braces or Invisalign. This reduces treatment time and the steps involved in achieving your dream smile.

Make Teeth Look Uniform

If you have one or two teeth that look out of place, porcelain veneers can make your smile look perfect and uniform.

Woman getting veneers The porcelain veneers process is multi-step. If you have chipped, cracked, discolored or uneven teeth you may be a candidate for this dental procedure. At Central Park Dental Clinic, we work passionately to provide you with a beautiful smile.

Veneers Procedure

If you think you could be a good candidate for dental veneers, the first step is to arrange a consultation with your cosmetic dentist. During your initial assessment, you can outline your smile goals to go over your dental options. During this time, an impression of your teeth may be made.

Once your impressions have been fabricated, your tooth will be prepped for the composite veneer. Generally, a small amount of tooth enamel may be removed, and your dentist will provide temporary veneers. At your next appointment, the temporary veneers will be replaced with your permanent porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are bonded to your tooth and resist staining, making them a natural-looking smile enhancer.
