Although most Canadians have visited the dentist in the last year, according to the Canadian Health Measures Survey, only about a quarter of Canadians floss at least five times per week. Of those who do, many people are not getting the most out of their oral hygiene habits.

With dedicated effort (about five minutes twice daily) oral hygiene at home and with professional dentistry in our Burnaby, BC dental clinic, you can not only maintain your natural teeth, but also avoid many dental emergencies that cause painful toothaches and time away from school or work.

Getting the Most out of Flossing Your Teeth

Creating a new habit is easier if you have a plan. The following tips will help you become a flossing pro and use your time wisely.

#1 Choose Floss That You Like

If you prefer a certain type of dental floss, treat yourself! Struggling with floss that doesn’t fit easily between your teeth will just cause frustration. Closely spaced teeth will often benefit from floss tape or heavily waxed floss. Gapped teeth or teeth with larger spaces between them might require thicker floss, such as woven floss with fluoride.

#2 Think of Floss as a Plaque Squeegee

Don’t just snap floss up and down between teeth. Take your time and glide floss up and down gently between teeth on both sides of your papilla – the V-shaped tissue between teeth. Move the floss only to the point of resistance, so you don’t damage your delicate gum tissue. The goal is to remove the white biofilm, called plaque, from your teeth, so take your time. Plaque that is not removed will eventually turn into tartar, which you cannot remove with your toothbrush and floss.

#3 Don’t Forget Your Back Teeth

Posterior teeth often miss the floss because many individuals don’t realise that you need to floss behind them. Since toothbrush bristles often miss this area because of the angle, spending some time flossing behind back molars will help you avoid gum disease and decay on those particularly vulnerable teeth.
