What to Do If You Have a Toothache and the Dentist Is Closed?

If you have a toothache or other dental emergency and our office is closed, we encourage you to call us after hours. Your emergency dentist in Burnaby can assess your situation and symptoms to determine the best course. If you’re in pain or your oral health is at risk, we can arrange dentistry outside regular business hours.

In some cases, if you’re not in pain, your dentist will see you the next day or at the next available appointment—this is only “if” you’re not in pain or your oral health is not at risk. If it is, we will see you as soon as possible.

Dental Emergencies in Burnaby

Toothaches with swelling are probably the most common dental emergencies. These toothaches typically result from root infections that need root canal therapy.

Other dental emergencies include:

  • Broken tooth or restoration
  • Knocked out tooth
  • Object stuck in oral tissues
  • Tooth or gum injury

Your Emergency Dental Visit

Our priorities are easing your pain and treating your emergency. This often involves x-rays to correctly assess the source of your pain or the extent of an injury. We can then numb the treatment area in most cases and start work.

Some dental emergencies—root canal infections, for example—require a follow-up visit. However, we’ll ensure your pain is controlled before you leave our dental office.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies

We all have emergencies from time to time, but most dental emergencies are preventable, especially oral infections.

To lower your risks for oral infections, brush your teeth and floss at least twice daily and visit your Burnaby dentist regularly for exams and teeth cleanings.

It’s also essential to wear the right mouthguard if you compete athletically. And always talk to your dentist if you notice changes in your oral health.
